As oncology coordinator, you will be learning about: medical terminology, pathology of the eye, which medical tests to order for which diseases and how to order them, how to analyze test results, and how to counsel patients about new diagnoses of cancer.  You will be part of the team that comes to the operating room to help Dr. Schefler in the examination of both children and adults with cancer. There will be some exposure to clinical trial research and opportunities to initiate individual retrospective research projects.

This job is an excellent opportunity for pre-med students who want to gain clinical experience for a medical school application. Benefits are: clinical exposure to present on a medical school essay and/or interview; opportunity to get an outstanding recommendation from a practicing clinician and researcher; interaction with residents and fellows; and career-defining exposure to both medicine and surgery. Previous coordinators have fared very well in the medical school application process. This job requires 5-6 months of training and a minimum of 2-3 years commitment.

Candidates must be able to travel to multiple clinics to meet the needs of the patients and providers and support the clinic's variable hours. Some shifts can consist of 10-hour workdays depending on the patient schedules for the day. There will be responsibilities regarding patient care by phone only a few weekends of the month.
